Hotel of the Month: The Cape Town EDITION, A New Waterfront Address

On 27 October, Cape Town will welcome one of the year’s most anticipated hotel openings, as EDITION makes its African debut. Bringing the brand’s particular mix of sharp design, destination dining and after-dark energy to South Africa, The Cape Town EDITION arrives on the V&A Waterfront, dramatically framed by Table Mountain, the Atlantic Ocean and the superyacht marina.

Set at Quay 7 on the edge of the evolving Granger Bay district, the hotel has been designed by Shanghai-based Neri&Hu in collaboration with South African architecture studio StudioMAS. First impressions are suitably striking, with a sculptural Drum setting the scene and hand-laid brickwork, artisanal masonry and tactile materials bringing warmth, texture and a distinctly Cape Town character to the interiors.

Elegant and relaxed, the 142 rooms and suites and six private residences continue the theme, with generous proportions, a calm coastal palette and views across the mountain, harbour and ocean. All have private balconies, while custom Le Labo amenities add a familiar EDITION touch.

Food and drink are every bit as considered. SHALE draws on the Cape coastline and Winelands, working with local producers and fishermen on a seasonally led menu. Elsewhere, the Lobby Bar is the social heart of the hotel, while the intimate Punch Room takes things into more seductive territory with late-night cocktails. Upstairs, the Pool Terrace and Vantage Bar & Lounge pair sundowners and skyline vistas with one of the city’s most spectacular Table Mountain outlooks.

A signature EDITION Spa, fitness centre and pool provide the counterbalance, with bespoke local experiences offering an easy route into Cape Town beyond the Waterfront. With galleries, restaurants and yacht charters on the doorstep, there is little danger of running short of reasons to venture out – although the hotel itself offers plenty of temptation to stay put.

October will also mark the official launch of the neighbouring marina, bringing another layer of glamour to this already striking corner of the city.
